In 2019 we began what we hope to be a longstanding tradition of ZooSoc, a photography competition to highlight and celebrate the incredible skills many of our members have! The wildlife and landscapes that were entered into the first competition were simply amazing! We created three categories;
- Best of the British Isles – to show what beautiful sights can be found in our local surroundings
- International Admiration – to highlight how diverse and well-travelled our members are, whether it’s the beauty found in your homeland or something you spotted on your travels.
- Macrophotography – For those with a keen eye and often a lot of patience, our macrophotography category lets us celebrate the little things in life.
We were so delighted with our entries! Our committee voted for our favourite in each category, but we didn’t want the rest to go unadmired, so we created our 4th category – The People’s Choice. This allowed everyone to vote for the photo they thuoght deserved to be up there with the best, irregardless of category. Our four winning photographs were printed onto beautiful canvases and now hang in the Graham Kerr Zoology Building – a public museum – where they are admired daily by all passers by and researchers within the institute.
We can’t wait to see what this annual tradition has in store for the future!
